Selling allotment produce – is it legal?
Allotment gardening is becoming increasingly popular, sometimes as family owned sites but increasingly as community projects.
Quite often such allotments will yield an excess of produce at certain times of year and people might want to sell that produce – particularly if it’s a community allotment site where income raised will support either the ongoing development of the site or perhaps other local projects.
But is it legal to sell allotment produce “for a profit?” Indeed, some people even ask if it is right to do so.
The starting point is that Allotment Gardens cannot be a business – but there are many exceptions whereby produce from allotments can be sold. This discussion paper produced by OrganicLea will hopefully provide some of those answers
