Our Social and Environmental Activities

RGR is a small business, but we take our responsibilities seriously. Firstly, RGR made a commitment upon launch in June 2008 to commit 0.7% of our annual turnover to support nominated development projects. We did this to highlight the poor performance of Western governments in meeting their own target of 0.7% of GDP provided for international development aid. In 2008/9 and 2009/10, RGR has supported two charities - TreeAid and RedR with donations of several hundred pounds. TreeAid does excellent work in West Africa helping rural villages to plant trees and provide food, fuel and shelter. RedR provides invaluable training and support for relief workers working in disaster stricken places (such as Haiti and those areas affected by the great tsunami) with a focus on sanitation and waste management. Both organisations deserve more support and are close to the heart of my business. RGR makes efforts to practice as it preaches. Although our operation is small, we make sure that waste is kept to a minimum and recycling is maximised. We buy recycled and sustainable office products and re-use wherever possible. Most of our travel is done by public transport and in the second year of operation we reduced our use of air travel by one-third compared to year one (by taking ferries to Ireland rather than fly, whenever time allowed). This year, we will be making a concerted effort to measure our environmental impact, despite the small size of our business. We have commited to the 10:10 campaign and are using their measurement tools to record our 2010 impact. RGR is always open to ideas on how to improve the monitoring of performance of the business without adding disproportionate administrative cost. Lke many others, our intention is good but we need help with measuring the detail.
